Halogens!

By: Ali Amos, Mack Ryan, and Rachel McLinden

The elements in this group are fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, and astatine. The word halogen means "salt forming". If you were to look at the periodic table of elements the halogen group would be the second row in from the left and the top five elements.

Iodine and astatine are solids. Bromine is a liquid. Fluorine and chlorine are gases.

Fun Fact: Fluorine can help prevent Thyroid Condtion.
Fluorine reacts with almost every other known substance.
If you don't combine the elements then they are very dangerous to humans.
If you combine fluorine with powdered glass or water it will burn.

Uses:
If you put together a compound of fluorine and carbon you can get a non-stick spray to put on cookware. If you add small amounts of fluorine to water can help prevent tooth decay.
When you combine chlorine, sodium and a couple of other things it creates table salt.
Chlorine gas is used in very small amounts to kill bacteria in water spots.
Calcium Chloride is Road Salt which melts ice.

Chemical Properties:
When you mix bromine and silver it becomes silver bromine, which means that they chemically form together.
Road salt is a chemical reaction because the salt chemically makes the ice hotter(an exothermic change) and melts it.
They have a specific melting point.

Physical Properties:
Bromine is liquid at room temperature.
Iodine is a solid at room temperature.
Fluorine is a gas at room temperature.
